What is Melbourne International Film Festival?

What is Melbourne International Film Festival?

What is MIFF?

It’s hard to escape the presence, noise and excitement of Melbourne International Film Festival if you live within Victoria. It’s an event that has been running for over 60 years and much like the state’s other passion (AFL) really brings together people (and films) from all walks of life. It’s the sort of event you go to, to see

The film festival saw 11,000 people through the doors of the Plenary during opening weekend alone.

4 Reasons to visit:

  • An incredible range of films from across the globe many of which you will not find anywhere else - weird and wonderful films that cover every niche and interest - think zombie, food, arthouse, documentaries etc - the list goes on….

  • Many of the films are accompanied by director’s Q&A’s and discussions - for those that want to nerd out

  • After an $18 million renovation the recently opened Capitol theatre on Swanston Street is an architectural masterpiece and an extremely luxe way to enjoy an afternoon at the movies

  • August is not Melbourne’s finest for weather! The cinemas are cozy, the red wine on pour - what else do you need?

Program highlights:

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Girlhood director Céline Sciamma returns with this beautifully calibrated, incandescent romance between a painter and her subject, which took home both Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm at this year’s Cannes.

First Love, directed by Takashi Miike

Sami Shah: This is a Japanese film by Takashi Miike. Who is a genius and I love all his films, so I'm really looking forward to seeing this one.

Bellbird, directed by Hamish Bennett

David Astle: Set on a remote NZ dairy farm, Bellbird is the bittersweet story of a man whose sudden loss obliges him to speak and love as if for the first time. Imagine About Schmidt, but with cows, ukuleles and sudoku.

The Handpicked Crew at MIFF - behind the scenes

We presented a range of wines for MIFF with a focus on keeping it local with our wines off our vineyards in Mornington and Yarra Valley. Our designer used some leftover wine cartons to build an installation for Opening Gala - in partnership with a ‘cardboard architect’ - yes, this job exists. Sustainability is becoming more and more important to our business and upcycling and minimising waste on our merchandise and activations is something we consider.

We do partnerships

Supporting culture and art in Australia is important to our team. Being creative and surrounding ourselves with creative communities that inspire us. Some of our other partnerships include Sydney Film Festival, Sydney Contemporary (coming up September 12-15), Heide MoMA, Belvoir Theatre and Australian Fashion Council. Keep your eyes out for what we are up to next.
