About The Region
Beechworth is a boutique wine region in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. Its vineyards and wineries are small and family-owned and the focus is firmly on premium quality wines, with fine attention to detail at every step.
The wine region is centred on the pretty town of Beechworth, which was established in the gold rush of the 1850s.
Elevation is crucial in this region known for elegant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz wines; neighbouring Rutherglen, at lower altitude, is a definite warm to hot region world-famous for its fortified wines.
Around the town of Beechworth most vines are planted at between 500 and 600 metres elevation, but there are vineyards on lower and higher slopes. The topography is complex so that no two sites are the same and different varieties and wine styles are produced. The various mineral-rich soils include sandstone, mudstone, shales and granitic soils.
The climate is continental and hot summer days are tempered by cool nights, so that fruit ripens well while retaining good balance and fine flavours. Frosts occur but careful selection of site and planting on slopes can minimise this risk. Disease pressure is generally low due to low humidity.
Beechworth retains much of its old world charm and the scenic beauty of the area draws visitors year round. There is walking in summer and snow skiing in winter. The Great Alpine Road is popular for car touring and cycling and the region is dotted with well-preserved historical sites.
