TASTING NOTES
Complex and self-assured, this is a bold wine for the serious Shiraz lover. The alluring nose has aromas of dark berry fruits, spice and a hint of ivy. The full-bodied palate is intense with loads of rich, dark berry fruit laced with graphite. Oak tannins add to the firm structure, yet the finish remains smooth and surprisingly soft for such a big wine.
SEASON
The 2012 season in Beechworth was uncharacteristic in many ways, but was ideal for premium Shiraz fruit. It was the coolest vintage for several years and one of the wettest summers on record. The long, cool season allowed grapes to ripen slowly and develop great depth and complexity of flavour while retaining good acid balance.
Regular rain kept the vines in tip top condition throughout the extended hang time and there were no heatwaves to damage fruit or vine. Harvest was quite late; we began picking Shiraz in mid-April.
WINEMAKING
The inspiration for this wine began well before harvest in the painstaking search for the greatest vineyards and finest fruit. Each parcel of perfectly ripe fruit was wild fermented separately in hand-plunged open fermenters. Individual parcels were pressed to barrel and each was carefully nurtured through its 12-month maturation. Sirugue barrels were chosen for their ability to bring out the best in spicy, full-fruited wines and a small number of Bossuet and Dargaud & Jaegle barrels provided added complexity.
The key stage of blending began about nine months into the journey. Every barrel was assessed and many hours spent at the tasting bench seeking a perfect harmony in the many elements that together make a truly great wine. The result is a uniquely balanced wine that slowly reveals its story of the place it was grown, the season it lived, the barrel it rested in and the hands and hearts it touched on its journey to you.
Beechworth is a boutique wine region in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. Its vineyards and wineries are small and family-owned and the focus is firmly on premium quality wines.
The wine region is centred on the pretty town of Beechworth, which was established in the gold rush of the 1850s.
10 years ago we challenged ourselves to explore Australia’s best terroir.
With the Handpicked Numbered Series we have reinvented the iconic Australian blended wine. Each wine in this series is unique, made in tiny quantities from special parcels of fruit and only made in exceptional vintages.
All great wine begins in a great vineyard. We select only the best fruit from outstanding vineyards that have a track record of producing exceptional fruit year after year.
Each label in the Numbered Series tells a story of craftmanship and origin through contour lines inspired by the landscape.
